The Pentland Firth is supposed to be one of the five wildest pieces of water in the World. I only ever had one really bad crossing on the Groats ferry when it was a converted fishing boat.

I've been at sea now for 36 years and to be fair I'm just about to wrap, I feel I have to talk about the RNLI who have ben a constant throughout my experience. My first contact with them was in 1990 in the Southern approaches when a gale dismasted a yacht and our ship answered the channel 16 call and provided a lee for the stricken vessel in tumultuous seas while the Scilly lifeboat made her way there to take off the crew. It really was quite desperate and when we saw the Severn class boat smashing over the massive seas, full hull exposed I felt proud, this thing powered in and took off the yacht crew as if they were in harbour then scarpered with nothing more than a 'thank you'. So cool, so proficient, so professional. From that day on I always but always put the change from a pint in the lifeboat, ALWAYS. Bearing in mind that I work at sea it pains me considerably to have to report that I can no longer donate my assistance to the RNLI because it strikes me that although not all but some of them are complicit in running illegal immigrants into our country a significant portion are, especially those supposedly engaged in life saving operations in the English Channel and I can no longer look upon this institution with pride but now am ashamed of their activities. I and every single British seafarer I know most certainly never donate to the RNLI as it is now and I would urge other members of the public to refrain from doing so also. It's a terrible shame, almost blasphemous but I can no longer support such an organisation.

The main boat shown, the Viscountess Wakefield, was stationed at Hythe on the south coast, and was abandoned on the beach at La Panne during the Dunkirk evacuation in 1940.

The Waveney class- (Tweedmouth has one as a Pilot boat) Billings model boats make a static kit in plastic- ;lovely soundtrack. Wish i was a little 1 year old baby again in 1964 instead of a 59 year old virgin.

The Cox'n on the Ben Barvas rescue, Dan Kirkpatrick, and his entire crew subsequently lost their lives in the Longhope Lifeboat Disaster of 17 March 1969.

An excellent example of the glorious Lifeboat Services stationed around the shores of our maritime nation. Now, under this country's political leadership, we are called out to "rescue" undocumented immigrants making illegal passage to our shores.....escaping 'persecution', or so they claim.

It's a shame that this type of craftsmanship is a dying art these days due to speed, cost, and repetition. They still don't make them today as good as the old ones made then. I am a skipper for one of the Floatillas based here in Melbourne for the Australian Volunteer Coast Guard. The boats have changed a lot over the years but nothing is as good as the old vessels for the express purpose that these were built in those times.

Love this footage as my Great Grandfather Thomas Duffin is one of the boat crew receiving his medal from the then Prince of Wales. Thomas Duffin volunteered that night in Fishguard while his own ship the St. Andrew, operated by GWR, was tied up on the ferry berth. I can only imagine the balls those men had to row an open boat out to the Dutch sailors in distress in foul weather. Funny how my brother is the spit out of Tom Duffin's mouth and how I chose a life at sea, sailing with Stena Line and the same route and rank (AB/Quarter Master) as our Great Grandfather. Thank you Hicklingstandard for this golden moment in the Duffin family history. I was also great-full to come into Toms Seaman's Discharge and Union Subs book. This film tops it off. Thanks again.
